Summary¶
This chapter introduces the process of peer review of journal articles as a part of the more general process of peer review of each other’s work and scientific collaboration. Its first part talks about different types and levels of peer review, depending on the type of scientific output. The second part of the chapter is specific to peer review of a manuscript and provides practical guidance for those who need to do a formal peer review for a journal.
Motivation and Background¶
Peer Review [def] should be seen as process that helps to improve the quality of the research. Peer review can be formal or informal and ideally occurs at different levels throughout a project. Traditionally the formal peer review has been associated with publishing a journal article. However, new forms of peer review are emerging in publishing and also beyond in the research landscape. We want to highlight that peer review happens on different levels throughout a project, and is an ultimate form of engaging with other people’s work.
